The Stagecraft Department offers articulated array of courses, providing training for set designers, costume technicians, makeup artists and hairdressers, wig specialists, toolmakers/property builders, machinists, mechanics, carpenters, electricians, and lighting designers. There are also specialized courses for audio technicians, photographers and videographers.
Students acquire skills working alongside Teatro alla Scala professionals, both on stage and in the workshops, to produce the shows on the season program. They will learn by doing, under the close guidance of an experienced teacher, just as apprentices once did in the bottegas of the Renaissance masters.
A fundamental part of students’ development is encounters with artists and professionals of international renown, such as Graham Vick, Tullio Pericoli, Luca Ronconi, Peter Stein, Roberto De Simone, Hugo De Ana, Franco Zeffirelli, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Franca Squarciapino, Luisa Spinatelli, Vera Marzot, or Anne-Marie Heinreich.
Many former students now work regularly at La Scala and/or collaborate with other important theatres and festivals in Italy and abroad: from Milan, Rome, Turin and Parma to Paris, Valencia and Madrid.
Not all the courses are offered every year: this is to ensure that the Accademia does not turn out more trained professionals than the job market can absorb.
