The Ballet School, founded in 1813 by Benedetto Ricci, has been headed by a whole series of prestigious experts and famous dancers: Carlo Blasis, Olga Preobrajenska, Enrico Cecchetti, Cia Fornaroli, Ettorina Mazzucchelli, Esmée Bulnes, Elide Bonagiunta, John Field and Anna Maria Prina.
Since 2006, the school has been directed by Frédéric Olivieri, who has also been Ballet Department Director since 2003.
The complete school dance course is spread over 8 years and allows students to obtain a diploma with a double specialization in classical-academic and modern-contemporary dance. The program is in line with the requirements of the most important international companies, which today require professional dancers to have mastery in an ever wider and more diversified repertoire.
The teaching staff includes Loretta Alexandrescu, Amelia Colombini, Alex d’Orsay, Vera Karpenko, Paolo Podini, Leonid Nikonov, Tatiana Nikonova, Bella Racinskaia, Antonella Stroppa, Emanuela Tagliavia and Maurizio Vanadia, who are assisted by collaborative pianists.
Throughout the duration of the course, students will take part in the most important of the Scala productions. In recent years, contact with world renown choreographers and dancers has become more and more common: Davide Bombana, John Clifford, Vladimir Derevianko, Patricia Neary, Suki Schorer and Francesco Ventriglia have all enriched the learning experience to be had at the Ballet School.
Moreover, contemporary repertoire has been widened significantly, thanks to choreography concessions made to the school, which include works by such artists as George Balanchine, Matz Ek and Jiří Kylian, just to name a few. The students have already performed these pieces in major Italian and European theatres.
In addition to being a privileged source of dancers for the Scala Ballet, the school also provides the highest level of training for dancers seeking to enter the most highly regarded companies in Italy and abroad.
Carla Fracci, Liliana Cosi, Luciana Savignano, Oriella Dorella, Paola Cantalupo, Marco Pierin are some of the great many alumni who have led successful careers in dance. Today’s stars include Roberto Bolle, Sabrina Brazzo, Alessio Carbone, Gabriele Corrado, Mara Galeazzi, Gilda Gelati, Massimo Murru and Marta Romagna.
