Founded on the initiative of Tito Varisco, Teatro alla Scala Stage Design Director from 1970 to 1978, the specialization course for scenic artists is today under the artistic coordination of Angelo Sala, head of the Scala stage design workshop, located at the former Ansaldo factory. The course aim is to prepare students to be able to ideate, design and carry out set and costume projects for operas and other types of productions, such as stage drama, cinema, television and special events.
The two-year course includes both classroom and hands-on learning, as well as internships at the Scala and other venues dedicated to live production.
The Scala stage design workshops are the main location for the course and the ideal place for students to experience practical training. Indeed, the passing on of knowledge from master to apprenctice, as was typical in the Rennaisance workshops, is recreated here by involving students actively in the work process.
Theatre productions, special events and international festivals offer further opportunities for students to gain first-hand knowledge.
The main instructors are Venanzio Alberti, Mariagrazia Caglio, Enrico Calza, Luisa Guerra, Angelo Lodi, Roberto Lucidi, Valerio Maraffa, Simona Olivieri, Roberto Panza and Clara Sarti.
In previous course editions, students have met such noted directors and set and costumes designers as Graham Vick, Tullio Pericoli, Luca Ronconi, Peter Stein, Roberto De Simone, Hugo De Ana, Franco Zeffirelli, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Franca Squarciapino and Luisa Spinatelli. They have also had the opportunity to work with companies like Freddy and Lavazza and with such important organizations and institutions as the Teatro Real of Madrid, the Teatro Donizetti of Bergamo, the Biennial of Venice and FAI.
